CRGC has six electric traps, which are only used during organized shooting, and one manual trap machine, located between trap houses one and two. (Trap houses are numbered from west to east.) The manual trap machine is available to club members and their guests during normal hours of operation, except on Tuesday and Thursday evenings or during a scheduled trap shoot.
Tuesday and Thursday Evening Shooting
Trap shooting is open to club members and the public every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The doors are open at or before 5:30 PM. There are six trap houses with Beomat trap machines which can be set up to throw standard practice, doubles, or Continental. The cost for 25 clay birds of trap practice (singles, doubles, or continental) is $4.00 for members and $4.50 for non-members. 12 gauge (#7 1/2 and #8 shot) and 20 (#8 shot) gauge shotgun shells are available for purchase at the clubhouse, as are foam earplugs.
Shooters who participate in the money shoots on Tuesday evening must sign up at the window to get a shooter number. After getting a number the money shooter may participate in as many games as they wish. The person pulling targets on the money trap (usually trap #2) will record the number of each shooter at the start of each game. Money shooters must check out at the cashier's window to pay for their games, or collect their winnings, before they leave the club. Each game costs $2.00, 50% of which is paid back to the winning shooters, and there is a $2.00 range fee for non-members which is charged with the first game. There are no money shoots on Thursday evening.
Shooters who wish to shoot practice trap can sign up at the cashier's window on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings. Payment for practice, shotgun shells, and earplugs is made while signing up. Shooters may sign up for as many rounds of trap as they wish at one time.
There is a Spring league which starts the first week of April, and runs for 8 weeks on Tuesday evenings, and a Fall league which runs for 4 weeks in September.
The CRGC kitchen and grill sells refreshments, snacks, and a selection of food for supper on Tuesday evenings, and Thursday evenings during trap leagues. The kitchen is open from about 5:30 PM to about 9:00 PM.
Other Shoots
CRGC also holds other trap shooting events which are open to the public and members alike. Two events which have become traditional at CRGC are the Turkey Shoot, held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and the Elwood Faist Memorial Shoot, which is held the Sunday before Christmas. In addition, there is a 30/60 bird backer sponsored by Millar Hiway Tire on the last Sunday in August, and the Dave Thompson Memorial Shoot is held the last Sunday in September. The doors open for these shoots at 8:00 AM, and the shooting goes on all day. Prizes are awarded, and meals are available. These events, and others which occur during the year, are publicized ahead of time in the Canby newspaper, the CRGC newsletter, and in the calendar on this web site.
Junior Trap Program
A Junior trap program starts the first Thursday in March before Spring league, and the Junior shooters are then organized into teams to take part in the Spring league. This program is free to juniors up to but not including 18 years of age. The minimum age varies, and depends upon the child. The only two minimum age requirements are that the junior:
CRGC provides the instruction, pays the trap fees, and provides the ammunition (either 12 gauge or 20 gauge shells) for the junior trap program. There is no cost to the junior or the parents. We also have five pump-action shotguns that are available for use by juniors who do not have access to an appropriate firearm.
The program runs each Thursday evening in March, starting at 7:00 PM. Each session usually starts with instruction in the clubhouse, covering firearm safety, shotgun operation, trap shooting procedures, and trap shooting technique. After the instruction, the class is broken into groups of 5 shooters, and taken out to shoot trap. Each junior is individually coached while practicing. The number of shots fired varies by shooter (one "round" of trap is 25 shots, 5 shots from each of 5 shooting positions), depending upon how well they are reacting to the recoil of the shotgun.
After the end of the junior trap program (the last Thursday in March), those juniors who wish to do so may form teams of 6 shooters and participate in CRGC’s Spring Trap League, which starts the first Tuesday in April, and runs for 8 weeks. The Spring League is a handicapped league, which tends to even out the scores between the very good shooters, and those who are not as good. CRGC waives the sponsor fee and shooter fees for junior teams, and may provide shotguns if necessary, but the juniors are expected to buy their own ammunition (1 box of shells per week - about $6.00).
